Boy to Man

This project has been created to engage boys (aged 8 to 14 years) across Kirklees, especially those who are most disenfranchised and at risk of gang involvement, mental health problems or under achievement within education and employment.
We will engage with African and African Caribbean boys and young men at the earliest possible stage to contribute towards helping to develop and forge them into adults who will be better prepared to develop positive relationships; have stronger senses of identity; have better social skills; have increased confidence levels in themselves and what they can achieve; become better parents; have a good understanding of deferred gratification and the benefits of education and a better understanding about behaviour and its effects on self and others.

Windrush Day Projects

We delivered a range of Windrush based activities and projects in 2019, including:
The creation of a commemorative Community Garden
Workshops on “Creating your family tree”
An exhibition which shows Windrush Generation images.
A public screening of the Venn Street Reunion video.
A nostalgic event for up to 1200 community members, in remembrance and celebration of the contributions of Venn Street and other similar venues to the integration of the Windrush Generation into British society.
These projects enabled us to meet the objectives of commemorating, celebrating and educating communities about the arrival and contribution of the Windrush Generation.
We have an exciting and unique programme planned for 2022, following consultations with African and African Caribbean community members across Huddersfield.

Windrush 2022 Programme

The 2022 Windrush Celebrations were a roaring success. The programme consisted of online workshops, displaying the Windrush Exhibition in various locations, the Windrush Play and a musical event, attended by over 500 people.

We aim to deliver a 2023 programme which will be even more exciting, unique and impactful than previous ones, building upon the strong foundation we have succesfully built since the first programme in 2019.

PROJECTS & ACTIVITIES

True Colours

True Colours young people’s community choir was formed in 2000 and brought together children and young people of all ages and backgrounds from across Huddersfield town. The choir was directed and trained by experienced singer-songwriters and supported by a voluntary team and qualified youth and community workers.
The choir performed at many corporate and private events over the years and helped children and young people to engage in an activity which they enjoyed and helped them to develop a range of interpersonal and life skills, which have been transferable to other areas in their lives.

Saturday School

The project engaged children and young people every weekend in a variety of fun activities, including dance, performing arts, poetry, art and craft and theatre visits.

During school holidays (particularly Summer), we run playschemes, attracting over 100 children and these are very popular. Not only do we encourage children and young people to have a say in the running of the project, but also build confidence and self-esteem thereby helping them to reach their full potential.

We are a small number of volunteers, always looking for help from enthusiastic individuals, comprising of three teachers and three counsellors. We give advice and support to parents, particularly on educational matters and work on a one-to-one basis or small group with children experiencing difficulties in school.
